Respect: To hold someone in high esteem or special consideration.
Discipline: The training of the mind and character in accordance with the rules of self-control.
Dedication: To commit or devote to any serious training or purpose.
Confidence: A feeling in which one is self-assured or convinced.
Patience: The ability to put up with pain, difficulties, and hardships without complaint.
Integrity: The quality of being honest and trustworthy.
Self-esteem: To believe in yourself.
Self-control: The ability to prevent oneself from expressing strong emotion.
Honor: Great respect or high moral integrity.
- Never play around or practice any other sport on the Do Jang floor.
- Never smoke, drink, eat, or chew gum during class.
- It is not encouraged to get a drink of water or use the restroom during class; if you need to, however, you must ask the instructor to be excused.
- Never come to class after having consumed alcohol.
- Always wear the correct colored belt for your rank.
- Students should at all times make a personal effort to ensure that their Do Bulk (uniform) is clean, and that they have good standard hygiene. This includes keeping your fingernails and toenails clipped.
- Students, both male and female, should remove all jewelry before starting class. This is for your protection.
- Students should remove their shoes before entering the Do Jang.
- If you are late or have to be excused for some reason, ask permission from the instructor.
- It is the responsibility of the student to pay membership fees when they become due and at the beginning of each month. Any payments made after the 15th of the month will be subject to a $10 late fee. It should not be necessary to request payment of fees from students.
- Students must always wear the proper uniform and patches authorized by the head instructor; e.g., white belts through red belts can only wear white uniforms, Black Belts can wear black pants and a white top with black trim.
- No demonstration or exhibition can be done without the permission of the head instructor.
- Students must bow upon entering and leaving the Do Jang.
- Students should use "Mr." or "Ms." when addressing Black Belts.
- Students should bow to the instructor.
- When practicing, care must be taken at all times to avoid accidents. You must respect your training partner.
- The Martial Arts are for defense only. Use of excessive force is not permitted at any time.
- The most important rule is self control; loss of your self control is obvious to all. We must all try our best to achieve this goal.
The Tae Kwon Do poomse or forms consist of stances, blocks, punches, strikes and kicks arranged in a meaningful order in response to attacks from imaginary assailants attacking from several directions. Poomse practice is considered extremely important. Each poomse has its own distinct character. Each is understood in terms of the whole rather than an assortment of techniques. There is an inherent unity to each form.
The first form taught is called Ki-Cho-Il-Bu (Ki-Cho 1). This form teaches the student the basic pattern with the least amount of techniques (front stance, low block and reverse punch). This form is universal to many martial arts. Because of my training in many different styles of martial arts I found that this form is easy to learn and doesnt overwhelm the beginning student.
Each form is learned in order shown below, as the students ability prepares him to understand the more advanced forms. Pal-Gwe 1 through 8 plus Ko Ryo are required for promotion to Cho Dan.
